abstractSynopsis:
First staged in 1943, Castrated Chicken is known as The Pioneer of Taiwan New Drama Movement. Lin Tuan-qiu adapts ZhangW+CG278:CG280-huan’s novel, Castrated Chicken to illustrate each individual’ struggle with the change of traditional value (contextualized in Japanese colonization). The story describes the protagonist, Yue-li’s awakening process. After a series of life-changing events, e.g. marriage, husband’s death and the decline of family wealth, Yue-li comes to an awareness of new values and calls upon her courage to wrestle with life. Tainaner Ensemble’s version adds two new sections (from Zhang’s novel) to supplement Yue-li’s story: huagu zhen (ªá¹ª°}) at the beginning and the couple’s (Yue-li and the painter’s son) dying for love at the end. The play is pronounced in Taiwaneis a realistic portrayal of Taiwanese life under Japanese colonial ruling；the dialogues are created in the Taiwanese languagese in realistic manner. Stage and costume design display the picture of Taiwan in the early 20th century. The performance also includes live band to play various Taiwanese folk songs with new interpretation: violin, accordion and electro-base-guitar with suona.
